Deck Staining
One of the biggest issues that we see with novice painters is that they’re impatient when it comes to staining a deck. When applying wood stain to it, the first thing to do is wait a while for it to dry, so that the liquid stain itself can actually be soaked up well by the wood.
For example, if you have an ironwood deck in a place like Vancouver, Washington, (where it sometimes rains a lot depending on what time of year that you want us to do the staining), it could take about two or three months for it to dry out well enough for us to even start applying it. If the deck doesn’t dry out completely, it won’t properly accept the stain.
What we normally do when approaching a deck staining job is bring a lot of throw-away brushes so that we can really brush the stain down deep into the cracks, and get it on the sides in between the cracks of the wood on the deck. We’ll generally apply the stain again atop that layer with a roller, then hand wipe the entire deck with throw-away rags.
A lot of do-it-yourselves fail to wipe off the excess stain after they let it soak in. It’s important to wipe that off because if you walk on the deck a few days later it’ll leave footprints. Not hand wiping the excess off with very clean rags will also result in the deck collecting dust, which ruins the finish.
Cabinet Staining
Whether we are applying wood stain to your kitchen or bathroom cabinets, we always do a clean job. Cabinet staining is not so much of paint going everywhere, but it’s more of a dusty job. So in most instances, our staining contractors will approach a job by first examining the kitchen or bathroom and looking at the cabinets and how many they are. Then the homeowner will most of the time allow us to lay down our plastic in a place such as a garage that covers up the entire floor and any of their small belongings to protect them from the dust that will be in the air as we’re working.
Floor Staining
Maintaining cleanliness is also very important when we approach a floor staining job in Vancouver. When it comes to the sanding and finishing of floors, there can be several differences in working procedures depending on the company that’s actually performing the work.
Most do-it-yourselves simply don’t have all of the necessary tools and prep materials to properly do a floor staining job, and this is where our expertise comes in. Many times it’s just a better option price-wise to call professionals because the tools are pretty expensive. This is especially true if it’s just a one-time thing that you need to be done in your home.
For example, you may need items such as a nice working buffer with a 16-inch drive plate along with the same size conditioning pads. You’d also need 16-inch carpet circles, lots of cloth rags, brushes, gloves, and other items. We at Elegant Painters have all of those tools and more for your floor staining, so give us a call if you’re ready to make yours look brand new again.
